Personal Training for Fitness Over 40 in London

If you are 40 or over, training is a different problem than it was at 30. Recovery slows, hormones shift, and old aches start asking for attention. The right programme does not push harder: it programmes smarter.

Fitness Over 40

What training for fitness over 40 is

Fitness over 40 is personal training built for the physiology of the over-40 body, where recovery is slower, joints carry more history, and hormones shift, so the goal is durability across decades rather than a peak in a single season. If you are 40 or over, training is a different problem than it was at 30, and the right programme does not push harder: it programmes smarter.

Training in your 40s, 50s, and beyond brings a different set of constraints. Recovery slows between sessions, so younger-style high-volume programmes backfire. Hormonal and metabolic shifts change how the body stores fat and holds muscle. Decades behind a desk shorten the hips and lock the upper back, and old joint history in knees, backs, and shoulders is exactly what generic programmes ignore. For most, time-poor schedules make consistency the real constraint, not effort.

This is the specialism the whole practice is built around, informed by 18+ years coaching men and women through exactly this transition. Neil builds programmes for the over-40 body: more strength and mobility work, sensible conditioning, and recovery factored in from the start, whether one-to-one, across a structured 40+ Reset block, or delivered remotely with weekly check-ins for travellers. The programming adapts to each client, including the hormonal and recovery changes that come with perimenopause, menopause, and declining testosterone, so the approach fits your body and your goals.

Neil has been my PT since 2014. He is able to train you effectively at any age or ability (in my case, in my late 60s) and adapts your regime to get the very best out of you. My fitness wouldn't be where it is without Neil — an outstanding trainer who can really transform your sense of wellbeing.

I've been training with Neil (NMG) for several years now — professional and very knowledgeable, not only in fitness but the wider package: lifestyle, diet and healthy living. He understands the training needs of my age group and adapts his programme accordingly. You're not just a number to him.

I have been training with Neil on and off for years. He is amazing at tailoring the sessions to your personal goals, while always remaining conscientious of physical limitations. He is encouraging and patient, and never makes you feel judged or self-conscious.

I have trained with Neil for a couple of years. He has done an excellent job helping me improve my strength and stamina levels while motivating me to maintain my fitness training over the long term. He is a good listener and tailors sessions to an individual’s needs.

Neil was brilliant to train with, genuinely knows his stuff and always brought real positive energy to every session. He's reliable without fail, and meticulous in how he builds towards your fitness goals, nothing felt generic or phoned in. On top of that he's great fun to be around, which makes the hard sessions actually enjoyable. Couldn't recommend him more highly.

Was in need of a routine of working out in order to get back into shape and I found the perfect set up, friendly, encouraging and great at helping me achieve my goals. Would highly recommend NMG as the place to go for motivating you into getting fit and feeling good about yourself.

Neil is fantastic! He got me doing things in the gym I did not think was possible. For someone that hated squats at the start, I now embrace them. He is a friendly face with good banter and helps you hit your goals. An hour session flies by and you always feel good after a session. Thanks Neil for all your support and encouragement! You rock!

The benefits of training well over 40

Energy that lasts the whole week

Well-programmed training builds the engine your day runs on. As your fitness improves, work, family and late nights take less out of you, and you finish the week with something still in the tank.

Recovery that respects your age

Training built for the over-40 body works with slower recovery rather than against it. Sensible dosing and enough rest mean you adapt to the work instead of feeling run down by it.

Strength and mobility together

A balanced plan builds the strength to move well and the mobility to keep moving freely. Decades at a desk need not decide how your hips, back and shoulders feel.

Support through the shifts of midlife

Training is one of the most reliable ways to support how the over-40 body handles energy, body composition and mood through the hormonal and metabolic changes of midlife. It is a lever you can actually control.

Staying capable for the years ahead

The point of training over 40 is durability. Building strength and fitness now helps protect the everyday capability, balance and independence that many people quietly lose with age.

Why does training feel harder than it did at 30?

  • Slower recovery between sessions, so younger-style high-volume programmes backfire
  • Hormonal and metabolic shifts that change how the body stores fat and holds muscle
  • Decades behind a desk shortening hips and locking the upper back
  • Old joint history: knees, backs, shoulders, that generic programmes ignore
  • Time-poor schedules that make consistency the real constraint, not effort

Training over 40
FAQs

How is training over 40 different?

Recovery slows, joints carry more history, and metabolism shifts. Progressive overload still drives results, but the dose, recovery, and exercise selection change. Most over-40 clients do better with more strength and mobility work, sensible conditioning, and longer recovery than a programme written for a 25-year-old.

I have not trained in years: is it too late to start?

No. Many of my clients come back to training in their 40s, 50s, and 60s after a long gap. The first session is free precisely so we can meet you where you are, build technique and confidence first, and progress from a realistic starting point rather than an idealised one.

Do you coach both men and women over 40?

Yes. I work with men and women aged roughly 40 to 65, and the programming adapts to each: including the hormonal and recovery changes that come with perimenopause, menopause, and declining testosterone. Every programme is personalised, so the approach fits your body and your goals.
