Return-to-Training Coaching in London

Old knees, an unhappy back, or a long gap since you last trained are inputs to the programme, not reasons to stop. Train around your history and build back stronger.

Return to Training

What return-to-training coaching is

Return-to-training coaching treats old knees, an unhappy back, or a long gap since you last trained as inputs to the programme, not reasons to stop: it is training that respects your history while it builds you back stronger. A joint that complains in certain positions or a back that has flared before is exactly what a personalised programme is built around.

The reasons people stay out of training are familiar. A long gap since you last trained leaves strength and capacity reduced. Old injuries in knees, backs, and shoulders are exactly what generic programmes load badly. Returning after physiotherapy with no structured plan makes rebuilding capacity hard, desk-based posture shortens the hips and loads the lower back, and past attempts that pushed too hard, too soon, triggered a flare that set everything back.

After 18+ years coaching the over-40 body, Neil strengthens the muscles that support each vulnerable joint, works the ranges the joint actually has, and progresses from there, one-to-one, through a structured strength-and-conditioning block, or remotely with video form review for clients confident to train solo. Where a client is under the care of a physiotherapist or specialist, he coaches alongside that team and stays within scope. This is a personal training service, not medical treatment, but it is training that respects your history. The free first session starts from where you are today across movement, strength, and any history that matters, so you return confidently rather than risking a setback.

Neil has been my PT since 2014. He is able to train you effectively at any age or ability (in my case, in my late 60s) and adapts your regime to get the very best out of you. My fitness wouldn't be where it is without Neil — an outstanding trainer who can really transform your sense of wellbeing.

I've been training with Neil (NMG) for several years now — professional and very knowledgeable, not only in fitness but the wider package: lifestyle, diet and healthy living. He understands the training needs of my age group and adapts his programme accordingly. You're not just a number to him.

I have been training with Neil on and off for years. He is amazing at tailoring the sessions to your personal goals, while always remaining conscientious of physical limitations. He is encouraging and patient, and never makes you feel judged or self-conscious.

I have trained with Neil for a couple of years. He has done an excellent job helping me improve my strength and stamina levels while motivating me to maintain my fitness training over the long term. He is a good listener and tailors sessions to an individual’s needs.

Neil was brilliant to train with, genuinely knows his stuff and always brought real positive energy to every session. He's reliable without fail, and meticulous in how he builds towards your fitness goals, nothing felt generic or phoned in. On top of that he's great fun to be around, which makes the hard sessions actually enjoyable. Couldn't recommend him more highly.

Was in need of a routine of working out in order to get back into shape and I found the perfect set up, friendly, encouraging and great at helping me achieve my goals. Would highly recommend NMG as the place to go for motivating you into getting fit and feeling good about yourself.

Neil is fantastic! He got me doing things in the gym I did not think was possible. For someone that hated squats at the start, I now embrace them. He is a friendly face with good banter and helps you hit your goals. An hour session flies by and you always feel good after a session. Thanks Neil for all your support and encouragement! You rock!

The benefits of returning to training

Building back with confidence

A programme that respects your history lets you return to training without feeling you are risking a setback. You rebuild capacity gradually, from where you are today rather than where you used to be.

Stronger support around old niggles

Strengthening the muscles that support a joint and working the ranges it has can help the area cope better with everyday load. Training around your history is often exactly what helps.

Steady, earned progress

Progress that is earned rather than rushed reduces the boom-and-bust cycle of pushing too hard, too soon. The plan moves forward only as your body shows it is ready.

Capability back in daily life

As strength and confidence return, everyday movements that felt risky start to feel dependable again, whether that is lifting, bending or simply trusting your body.

Training that works with your care team

Where a physiotherapist or specialist is involved, coaching that stays within its scope and works alongside their guidance helps you rebuild sensibly rather than against the advice you have been given.

Has an old injury kept you out of the gym?

  • A long gap since you last trained, leaving strength and capacity reduced
  • Old injuries: knees, backs, shoulders, that generic programmes load badly
  • Returning after physiotherapy with no structured plan to rebuild capacity
  • Desk-based posture shortening hips and loading the lower back
  • Past attempts that pushed too hard, too soon, and triggered a flare

FAQs

Can I train if I have an old injury?

In most cases, yes: training around a stable, long-standing issue is often exactly what helps. We strengthen the muscles supporting the joint and work within the ranges you have. If something is acute or under active physiotherapy, we wait or coordinate with your clinician first.

I am returning after a long break, where do we start?

We start with a free assessment of where you are today: movement, strength, and any history that matters. From there I build a programme that rebuilds capacity progressively, so you return to training confidently rather than picking up where an old routine left off and risking a setback.

Do you work with my physiotherapist?

Yes. Where a client has a current injury, a medical condition, or a Harley Street or specialist referral, I coach alongside their medical team and stay within my scope. I provide personal training, not medical advice, but I will always work with, not against, the guidance you have been given.
